More City Hall Art

Last week we had a reception for the artists whose work is currently on display at Wellington City Hall. The artwork hangs for four months, and we have a reception about mid-way through. The receptions are open to the public, so it's a great opportunity to see the art and ask questions of the artists.

Here is artist Bobbin Salisbury next to the poster that greets you when you enter City Hall.

Here are a few of the WAS members who attended the reception. In the back row: Candra Conner, Leslie Pfeiffer, Joanne Baker MacLeod, Laura Willems, Nancy Brown, and Ilkin Deniz. Front row: Suzanne Redmond, Corinne Ingerman, and Bobbin Salisbury.

The Latest City Hall Show

In my last post, I showed photos of the artwork that was on display at the Wellington City Hall this summer. Now, I'm going to give you a sneak preview of a few pieces that are on display right now. Be sure and stop by City Hall on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 for a reception where you can not only see all the artwork but you can also meet the artists. Here's a few of the art pieces that you will see.

Leslie Pfeiffer uses painterly realism to create oil paintings of landscapes, coastal scenes, and rainforests. She is often inspired by her recent travels. She was born in Chicago, and began creating with sketching, painting, and sculpting with clay. Since moving to Florida she has taken classes and workshops and been mentored by these amazing artists: David McElroy, Caspar McCloud, Nancy Tilles, Laurie Snow Hein, and Nelson Shanks. Leslie continues to explore different mediums and techniques and is currently using encaustic to create vibrant abstract works.

Here is one of her oil paintings that you can see at City Hall, titled "Golden Orchids." It is 16" x 20", and can be purchased for $850.

Wellington City Hall Artwork

We have a new show of paintings at Wellington's City Hall, but in case you missed it, I'm going to show you what was on display over the summer. Every four months, we rotate new artwork by our members. It's on display in the first floor lobby and the hallways of the second floor. We are able to display 20 - 30 pieces, so it is quite a stunning show.

I'll show you each of the pieces quickly, but be sure and click on the artist's name which will link to their website and you can see more fabulous art.

Nancy Brown has been a member of the Wellington Art Society for about a year. She is a wonderful photographer who has traveled extensively throughout China. She can print her photographs on any size canvas. This first one is called "Eye of Giant Buddha."

Summer's Over -- Did You Miss These Shows?

After three months without membership meetings, we kicked off the new season with a lively welcome back to our members at our September Open House. We don't take time off from displaying our members' art, though. We had quite a few wonderful art exhibits this summer, and in case you missed them, I'm going to post some of the artwork here in the next few weeks.

First of all, one of our longest-running exhibits is our display of artwork at the City of Wellington's Community Center. We're all familiar with that space, because that is where we hold our monthly meetings. This artwork is located in the Card Room, and is seen by many groups who use that room as well as the large Grand Cypress Room for their meetings and events.

We Get Out, and We Have Fun

The Wellington Art Society doesn't hold meeting during the summer months, but we do get out to have fun. Here are a few of us at the Norton Museum Art after Dark event in the summer.

Art at the Boys and Girls Club

Wellington Art Society member Corinne Ingerman brings our members to the Wellington Boys and Girls Club once a month. We teach the kids art techniques, and let them get a little messy. Here is Corinne with Ursula Fernandez, who came one month to pass on her knowledge and enthusiasm.

Meet New Member Deb LaFogg

Some of our long-time members may recall artist Deb LaFogg, who was a member about four years ago. She recently attended one of our meetings and decided to re-join. We're so happy that she did, because we get to hear about her paintings, like this one, titled "Squash Bug on Strap Fern."

This painting has been accepted into the Art of the Animal Kingdom XVIII show at the Bennington Center for the Arts in Bennington, Vermont. This show begins June 15 and will run through August 25. This is one of the most prestigious wildlife exhibitions, and over 65 pieces will be included in the show. Congratulation, Deb, and welcome! You can see more of Deb's artwork at her website here.

Carol Ann Sherman Dazzles with Yupo

At our March meeting, we invited artist Carol Ann Sherman to demonstrate her watercolor techniques on Yupo. I actually missed the meeting, and am so sorry I did. Carol Ann kept everyone entertained with her enthusiasm and her artistic talents. Here are some photos from the evening:

Artist Receptions and Art all About

WAS members are surely getting their art out there. Tonight you'll find six of our members at the PBIA Art in Public Places reception. Recently Joanne Baker MacLeod exhibited her work in the Lake Worth Art League's show "Spring Fever." Her painting titled "Massachusetts Stream" earned Second Place.

Travel Through the Airport and Enjoy Local Art

Palm Beach County's Art in Public Places program manages an art display at Palm Beach International Airport. Anyone in the county can apply to this show,  which changes every few months. Many of our members have entered this show. The artwork is seen by thousands of people each day as they pass through the airport. The reception for this show will be April 10 from 5:30 - 7:30 on Level 2 of the Main Terminal. Here is Kathy Morlock's watercolor painting called "Tropical Rainforest."

Have you Been to Jerry's?

Jerry's Artarama is a great art supply store right here in West Palm Beach. Over a year ago, they moved to this new location at 2505Q Okeechobee Blvd. in the Westward Shopping Center. They have canvas, they have paint, pastels, pencils, and thousands of other art supplies. And, the most important thing, their employees are experts and can answer your trickiest questions. Recently they invited the members of the Wellington Art Society to come in after hours and shop with a nice discount. We love how they support our artists, and many of us took advantage of the evening. Here is store manager Margot Weissman showing off the goodies they had for us that night to Kathy Morlock.

Art in Public Places -- City of Wellington

The City of Wellington has been running an Art in Public Places program for quite some time. The artwork changes about every three months. Anyone is welcome to submit their artwork to this program, and the artwork hangs in various public buildings around the City.

The Wellington Art Society hosted a reception for these artists at the beginning of their January meeting. Here are a few of the artists that night. Left to right: Talia Fradkin, Jeannette Pomeroy Parssi, Joanne Baker MacLeod, and Hildegard Donavan.

North end Gallery: Art on Park

The Artists of Palm Beach County (another artist group that we have here) has opened a gallery on Park Avenue called Art on Park. They are doing rotating exhibits, as well as offering co-op and studio space. A few of our members have displayed their artwork there, and I'd like to show you some from the current show.

Art Around Town -- OSGS in Northwood

Have you been around Palm Beach County and noticed that there are a lot of opportunities for artists to display their work? Our members have certainly been getting out and getting noticed. We recently heard of a new gallery that opened in the Northwood area of West Palm Beach. It's called OSGS, and it's located at 500 Northwood Rd. It is the brainchild of Jonathon Ortiz-Smylka, who is an amazing artist in his own right. I guess he figured, the best way to display his art is to do it himself. The rest of the art world benefits with the opening of this gallery in the heart of the busy Northwood area.

Have You Been to a Meeting Lately?

The Wellington Art Society holds meetings the second Wednesday of the month at the Wellington Community Center. If you haven't been in awhile, you might want to check them out. We like to start out at 6:30 with refreshments. We know some members are coming from work, and may be hungry for dinner. The first half hour is reserved for socializing, and that's your chance to catch up with friends you haven't seen in awhile.

We've recently gained quite a few members, so we used that time in February to give them a chance to show off their artwork. Whenever we get a new member, we're so curious to see what kind of artwork they create.

Here is Nancy Brown showing photos from her trips to China. Nancy has also published a book of her photographs, and you can see pictures on her website here.

Say Goodbye to Marie Lentine's Whole Foods Show

March 1 marked the end of Marie Lentine's solo show of her art at Whole Foods Market in Wellington. We enjoyed having her acrylic and watercolor paintings there for the last three months. We celebrated Marie at a reception where Whole Foods provided a musician, wine and refreshments. Here Marie is enjoying talking with one of her guests.

A Variety of Art at the Community Center

We're a couple weeks into a three-month show of our members' artwork at the Wellington Community Center. On the first floor we've placed 11 paintings in the Card Room. This room gets a lot of usage by Wellington's residents, so it's a high visibility spot for paintings.

Artists Donate Art to Palms West Hospital

We're in the middle of a large project to bring paintings to Palms West Hospital in Loxahatchee. We have a long history of donating artwork to this local hospital, and you can see earlier posts of this art here and here.
Right now, we're creating paintings that will soon hang in their children's hospital. While the building is still under construction, our artists are working their magic to create new artwork for the walls. Ultimately, we will donate about 50 pieces to the hospital. Some of them are completed, and I'd like to give you a sneak preview here. All paintings are done in non-toxic acrylics.

This first one is done by Charlie Smith.

Great Summer Weather for an Art Show

It's January in Florida, and usually that means it's a little cool out, maybe in the 60's. Well, we've been rocking the 80's for the past four weeks, and our recent outdoor art show was no exception. The Wellington Art Society kicked off the South Florida art show season with our two-day ArtFest on the Green January 5 and 6. With over 40 talented artists, music all day at the Wellington Amphitheater, and this great Florida winter weather, the crowds couldn't keep away from this fun event.
